The barrel is made up of staves, rings, backs, lids and a stopper. These elements must fit with each other perfectly, without extra materials, such as nails or rivets. On the other hand, the humidity swells the parts creating a cohesive
whole. If there's a cohesion failure, cattail is used. Cattail is a river plant whose leaves are dried, to be used as packing and sealing of the various parts of the barrel. Our founder, Alejandro Hernández, became a pioneer in Venezuela by
aging rum using small barrels instead of large ones. A small barrel optimizes the contact and therefore the interactions of the rum with the internal wooden surface of the barrel, providing a higher concentration of aromatic components.
The next step is the preparation of the barrels. Distilled alcohol requires barrels in excellent condition for aging, hence the need for the barrels to undertake conditioning requirements to guarantee excellent aging. One of the critical
processes of this stage is the hydration of the barrel and the leak tests. These processes are executed by expert coopers who gain experience performing these tasks with passion and dedication.
